Report reveals Maguire may have agreed with decision to send off Martial against Spurs

According to The Metro, new footage from Tottenham Hotspur’s thrashing of Manchester United appears to show Man United captain Harry Maguire agreeing with the referee’s decision to show Anthony Martial a red card.

Spurs were 2-1 up and in the ascendancy when Martial got his marching orders from referee Anthony Taylor for an off-the-ball altercation with Erik Lamela.

The decision certainly impacted the game, with Jose Mourinho’s side making their man advantage count and running riot after the incident.

Replays showed that it was Lamela who had initiated the altercation as he seemed to push Martial away by putting his hand on his chest before the Man United forward responded by shoving the Argentine in the face.

Some pundits have insisted that either Lamela and Martial should have both been given their marching orders or should have each stayed on the field (Sky Sports via Football.London).

It appears that Rashford made the same point to Tierney during the match, insisting that Lamela should have also seen red for elbowing the Man United frontman.

Rashford reportedly asked the referee, “Nothing for that elbow?” and when Taylor showed Lamela a yellow card, the 22-year-old reportedly cried: “Why?! It’s the same!”

It is claimed that Maguire and Rashford then argued about the decision, with the United skipper telling Rashford: “It’s not violent conduct they’ve checked,” but the forward responded: “He’s [Lamela] elbowed him!”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that the red card was harsh on United and that we would have been complaining if we were on the receiving end of that decision. However, it was clear that it was a deliberate ploy from Lamela, who was fishing for a reaction from Martial and made the most out of it. I am sure Mourinho would not have minded what he saw from the Argentine given his repeated insistence that the squad is too nice.
