Report reveals Nuno communication decision that made some Spurs players ‘wary’

According to The Times, Nuno Espirito Santo’s practice of communicating with his coaching staff in Portuguese did not go down with the Tottenham players.

Since Spurs confirmed Nuno’s sacking on Monday, there have been several reports detailing the behind-the-scenes story of how things went wrong for the former Wolves boss in North London.

According to The Athletic, Nuno was seen as quite distant and hardly had any one-to-one conversations with the players like his predecessors, Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

The Evening Standard also backed that up and that claimed that Nuno’s tactical approach was also not popular with the players, with some members of the squad being bemused by a strange drill where defenders were asked to play in an attacking role and vice versa.

The Times have now shed light on another issue that the Tottenham players had with Nuno. It is explained that Nuno preferred to speak in Portuguese at the training ground to his inner circle of coaches.

Some players reportedly became ‘wary’ of this and asked teammates to translate what had been said.

Based on the sheer number of issues that have come to the fore over the last couple of days since Nuno’s sacking, it is evident that things were much worse behind the scenes than they seemed. In fact, I would not be surprised if the input from the players was one of the main reasons Nuno and Paratici decided to call time on the Nuno project.
