Report reveals potential blow to Tottenham’s hopes of hanging on to Sergio Reguilon

According to a report from Football.London, Tottenham’s hopes of hanging on to Sergio Reguilon could receive a blow if Real Madrid part ways with Zinedine Zidane.

There has been plenty of speculation over the last couple of days in Spain over Zidane’s future after Real Madrid’s shock defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk which has left them on the brink of an early exit from the Champions League.

The Los Blancos have reportedly inserted a buy-back clause that would allow them to re-sign Reguilon for around £35m, which lasts until the summer of 2022.

Alasdair Gold previously reported that the Spanish giants cannot activate the clause mid-season and can therefore only do so either next summer or after the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.

It has widely been reported in Spain that it was Zidane who gave the green light for the 23-year-old to leave the club (El Confidencial via Daily Mail).

Football.London now claim that the club may well decide to activate the left-back’s release clause next summer if Zidane leaves, as whoever replaces the 48-year-old could see the Spain international as their best option at left-back.

The report notes that Real Madrid have changed their tunes on the likes of Alvaro Morata and Mariano Diaz in recent years and decided to bring them back to the club, suggesting that they could do the same with the Tottenham man.
