Report reveals Spurs and Mourinho now keen on this versatile 28-year-old right-back

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing Wolves right-back, Matt Doherty this summer.

Serge Aurier continues to be linked with a move away from Spurs with AC Milan and Bayern Leverkusen set to battle it out for the Ivory Coast international’s signature (Corriere della Sera via Sport Witness).

Gold has now revealed that Spurs want to replace the former PSG man with Doherty, with Jose Mourinho said to be a big fan of the Wolves man.

In fact, it is said that the Tottenham boss believes that the Republic of Ireland international can not only flourish as a right-back but is also capable of doing a job as a wing-back, right-sided midfielder, and as a left-back.

The 28-year-old is said to tick many boxes for Spurs as he comes with Premier League experience and qualifies as homegrown, as he spent three years at Molineux before he turned 21.

The report suggests that Doherty could be available for around £12million, with Wolves expected to complete a deal to sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal.

However, it is said that Nuno Espirito Santo’s fondness of Dublin-born defender might prove a hindrance in Spurs’ attempts sign the right-back.

Spurs Web Opinion

Doherty would be an excellent fit for us irrespective of whether we continue playing a lopsided back four like last season or we adopt a back five with traditional wing-backs as we did in part of the first half against Ipswich on Saturday. However, I am highly suspicious of the suggestion that Wolves would be prepared to let him leave for as little as £12m, given how well he has played for the last two seasons.
