Report reveals Spurs transfer decision that left some senior players ‘baffled’

Senior players in the Tottenham squad were baffled by the club’s decision not to sign a striker during the summer transfer window, The Athletic have revealed.

With Antonio Conte’s arrival, Spurs are expected to make a move for a forward during the January transfer window, with Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic reported to be on the club’s radar.

It has even been alleged that the North London club could reignite their interest in Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez despite the Argentine signing a new contract at the San Siro.

In hindsight, it seems Fabio Paratici and co arguably made an error in not bringing in another striker during the summer.

Kane’s form since his failed move to Manchester City has left a lot to be desired and Nuno Espirito Santo did not have any recognisable backup to call upon after the club decided not to make Carlos Vinicius’ loan move permanent.

The Athletic have now revealed that the Tottenham players expected the club to bring in another striker after Vincius’ loan spell ended.

Senior players in the dressing room are thought to have been perplexed by the club’s failure to strengthen in the position.

It was reported during the summer that Nuno wanted a forward to be brought in so that he could play a system with two strikers.

The fact that the Spurs hierarchy did not back the Portuguese coach in the market suggests that they were never really convinced that he was a long-term solution.
