Report reveals the defensive selection Jose Mourinho ‘will be avoiding at all costs’

Football Insider have reported that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff want to avoid playing a centre-back pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier at all costs this season.

Dier has been a first-choice centre-back for the Spurs boss since the end of last season but the England international has missed the last two matches with a hamstring injury.

Toby Alderweireld has been in and out of the side, while Davinson Sanchez came in for plenty of criticism after Tottenham let their three-goal lead slip against West Ham last Sunday.

Mourinho’s other options include new signing, Joe Rodon, Ben Davies, who did a fine job playing as a left-sided central defender against LASK, and Japhet Tanganga, who is still recovering from a thigh injury.

Football Insider reveal that the Dier-Alderweireld partnership is now seen as the last resort due to their lack of pace.

It is claimed that, while Mourinho sees both players as an important part of his plans, he is unlikely to pair them together again in the heart of the defence.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs fans must take this report with a pinch of salt. I highly doubt Mourinho is worried about Dier’s ‘lack of pace’. We have seen enough evidence to suggest that he sees Dier as his first-choice centre-back and the England man will start if he is fit. To suggest that Dier lacks pace is extremely wide off the mark. People have misconceptions about his pace due to his running style but he eats up ground fairly quickly.
