Report reveals the real reason Jan Vertonghen was left in the stands against Villa

Since arriving at the club, Jan Vertonghen has been one of the most consistent defenders at Tottenham and in the Premier League in general.

He is one of Spurs’ longest-serving players and is currently one of the vice-captains to Hugo Lloris, which made it all the stranger when he was left out against Villa.

With Jan and Toby both in the final year of their contracts in North London, you could understand Pochettino promoting the likes of Davinson Sanchez to a few more starts to future proof the squad.

However, Vertonghen was not even dropped to the bench in place of Sanchez in the season opener, he was seen sitting and watching the game in the stands.

The Daily Mail now claim that Jan was left out of the squad completely due to poor fitness levels and a bad pre-season.

The report states that Poch is a fan of looking at fitness data and Vertonghen has not returned to Prem football in top shape, so was dropped.
