Report reveals the type of player Conte wants next after Spence signing

According to The Evening Standard, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte still wants to add a creative midfielder to his squad this summer, with Djed Spence set for a medical today.

Since losing Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan in January 2020 (BBC), Spurs have arguably been without a consistent central attacking midfielder.

Both Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso have featured for the Lilywhites in this role, however, injuries and inconsistency have halted the duo’s progress.

The aforementioned players were also left to train at Hotspur Way as Conte’s side jetted off to a pre-season tour of South Korea, proving they are not in the Italian’s plans (Sun).

The Evening Standard claim that Conte still desires a creative spark in his midfield and Spurs are open to exploring any opportunities which may arise for a player in this mould.

Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold has previously suggested that Spurs have a long-standing interest in Leicester City’s James Maddison.

The Englishman racked up 12 goals and eight assists in the Premier League last season (TransferMarkt) and aside from his attacking abilities, would help Spurs’ homegrown quota.

Spurs have also been credited with an interest in 24-year-old Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta (Football.London), with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas confirming that the French club have received proposals for the talented Brazilian (Evening Standard).

I would absolutely love Fabio Paratici to bring in a forward-thinking influence to add to Spurs’ midfield. At times, the Lilywhites have struggled to break down low defensive blocks, so a player of this ilk would certainly add another string to Conte’s attacking bow.

Maddison is Prem proven and would allow Conte to deploy a 3-5-2 formation when needed. Personally, I think Spurs should be all over the 25-year-old.
