Report reveals Tottenham’s transfer strategy for the rest of the January window

Tottenham Hotspur will prioritise moving on a number of fringe players in their squad, before making a late swoop for a new midfielder at the end of the January transfer window, a report from Football Insider claims.

It has been a busy month for Spurs already, with the arrival of Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin boosting Ange Postecoglou‘s squad in key areas.

Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier have moved on to pastures new, while Japhet Tanganga, Sergio Reguilon, Djed Spence, and Alfie Devine have all secured new loan moves away from the club.

Slowly but surely, the squad is looking more and more like a Postecoglou squad. But the work isn’t over, it seems. A recent report from The Independent suggested finding a new midfielder, specifically a number 8, would be the next priority for the club this month.

Spurs will sell first and buy later, if they can

However, before we see that happen, it would appear Spurs are going to look to offload a number of peripheral figures during the winter window. That’s according to the latest from Football Insider, who claim only then, will a move for a midfielder come to fruition.

Two names mentioned are Bryan Gil and Ryan Sessegnon. The pair have barely featured under Postecoglou this season and it is believed Tottenham would be “happy to let them go if appropriate offers are received.”

Apparently, once “a number of fringe squad players” depart the club, the Lilywhites will then attempt to bring in a new midfielder “late in the window” as a “priority.”

Regardless, Spurs are thought to “remain active” in their search for that midfielder, with Conor Gallagher and Kalvin Phillips both mooted as possible options.

Spurs Web Opinion

To be honest, as much as we all want to see a new midfielder come in, I am just as happy to see the club finally making progress in clearing out the unwanted players here. We need to properly revitalise this side, and meaningful departures are just as important as new arrivals.
