Report reveals update on Spurs chase for Gvardiol – Potential future release clause

According to Croatian publication Sportske Novosti, Tottenham target Josko Gvardiol is expected to sign a new contract with RB Leipzig.

Tottenham are reportedly ready to spend big on a left-sided centre-back this summer, with Gvardiol thought to be one of the names on the club’s radar (The Athletic).

Multiple sources (The Express’ Ryan Taylor and The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke) have said over recent weeks that Spurs will find it difficult to pull off a deal for the 20-year-old this summer, with Leipzig determined to keep hold of the player.

Sportske Novosti have now revealed that Spurs and Chelsea continue to have their eyes on Gvardiol and are eager to snap him up this summer.

The report adds that Antonio Conte is ready to allocate a significant portion of his transfer budget to bring the Croatian international to North London.

However, it is explained that Gvardiol is expected to stay at the Red Bull Arena at least until next summer.

Sportske Novosti claim that the centre-back will sign a new contract that is likely to include a release clause of well over €50m (£42.9m), which can be activated next summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

It seems like neither of Tottenham’s top two targets for the left centre-back role in Bastoni and Gvardiol are likely to be available this summer. I suspect that Spurs will turn their attention to Pau Torres if that is the case.

However, the fact that the North Londoners have not yet pushed ahead with a move for a left-sided centre-back despite that being a key area to address, suggests that they might have a surprise up their sleeve.
