Report reveals what Bale was doing instead of having a medical in Madrid

The news of Gareth Bale’s impending Spurs return broke early last week but it took until Saturday evening for Tottenham to officially confirm his signing, along with that of Sergio Reguilon.

A report in The Athletic has now offered one possible reason why the transfer might have been delayed.

They reveal that when Bale was said to be having a medical in Madrid on Thursday, the winger was actually getting in one final round of golf in the Spanish capital before departing.

The Welshman’s fondness for playing golf has made him the butt of many jokes over recent years, with his decision to hold up a banner reading “Wales, golf, Madrid” after he helped Wales qualify for the Euros last year, causing quite a stir back in Madrid (Guardian).

The Athletic also reveals that Bale has finished his search for a new home back in London, with the 31-year-old said to have identified a rental property with golf facilities.

Too much has been made of Bale’s fondness for golf by the media over the last few years. What he does with his downtime is his own business. As long as he gives his all on the pitch, it should not matter how many rounds of golf he plays during his days off or when he is injured.
