Report reveals what Jan Vertonghen was hoping for with his next move

The Express have claimed that Jan Vertonghen was hopeful that another Premier League club would come in for him and offer a big contract this summer after his contract with Spurs ran out.

Vertonghen departed left North London after eight fantastic years at the club and some Spurs fans were understandably quite emotional to see the back of the 33-year-old.

There has been plenty of speculation regarding the central defender’s next club (TuttoMercatoWeb), with the former Ajax man revealing that he had a preference over his next move and was waiting to see if it came to fruition (talkSPORT).

The Express reveals that Vertonghen’s first preference was to stay in the Premier League after running down in his contract in North London but he is now likely to be on his way to Italy.

It is asserted that the experienced defender is at at the centre of a three-way tug of war between Roma, Fiorentina and Inter Milan.

The report suggests that while Roma see the defender as an alternative to their number one target, Chris Smalling, Fiorentina have made Vertonghen their main target and are ready to offer him a £50,000 a week contract.

Spurs Web Opinion

I find it hard to believe that Vertonghen was hoping to play for another Premier League side. He has made it clear that he likes developing special relationships with his clubs and his career at Ajax and Tottenham is a testament to that.

Vertonghen still looks fairly fit and I believe he has at least a couple of years left in him at the top level. He can certainly be an important player for the likes of Roma, Inter or Fiorentina. I am hopeful that he will have better luck with respect to winning silverware at his next club.
