Report reveals what Spurs’ hopes are for £27m midfielder next season

Steven Bergwijn enjoyed the dream start to his Tottenham Hotspur career when he scored a stunning volley against Manchester City in front of a capacity-filled crowd.

The winger had completed his £27million switch from PSV Eindhoven just a matter of days before the fixture, penning a five-year contract (BBC).

The 23-year-old has only managed to score three further goals since that memorable afternoon in North London in February of last year.

Jose Mourinho’s tactical set-up saw him task Bergwijn with having a heavy reliance to track back the opponent into the Tottenham half which severely limited his pose a threat in the final third of the pitch.

His lack of regular game time from February onwards saw him eventually miss out on a place in Frank de Boer’s Dutch 26-man squad for Euro 2020, after originally being named in the provisional list (Daily Mail).

Football.London have claimed that Bergwijn is expected to remain at the club next season under new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

There is a belief that the right-footer needs some time and confidence in order for him to rediscover the creative side of his game which saw him become a hit at PSV.

SpursWeb Opinion

Bergwijn looked short of confidence last season under Mourinho, especially after he missed that opportunity to put Spurs ahead against Liverpool at Anfield in a match which we eventually lost.

A fresh start under Nuno will do the Dutchman the world of good.
