Report reveals when Spence first spoke about prospect of joining Spurs

According to The Athletic, new Spurs man Djed Spence had his heart set on a move to N17 as early as January.

Spence completed a long-awaited move to Spurs on Tuesday morning, after weeks of negotiations with Middlesbrough finally saw an agreement reached on the fee (Football.London).

The 21-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Lilywhites and is expected to be integrated with his new teammates this week (Football.London).

Although Antonio Conte has admitted that the transfer was one that was pushed more by Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy, Spurs’ Italian boss also declared to Football.London that Spence could become an ‘important player’ for the club.

It seems as though the England Under-21 international had already decided on his ideal destination halfway through last season.

The Athletic claim that the wing-back was telling his teammates he would be moving to Spurs back in January, although a transfer in the winter window was too complex due to his loan situation at Forest.

It would have been great to have Spence on board in January in order to give him six months to adapt to Conte’s demands before the new season. This has clearly been beneficial to January acquisitions Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Hearing that the player was adamant about moving to Spurs shows the lure the club now has with Conte at the helm and Champions League football available.
