Report reveals why Conte felt ‘restricted’ at times at Tottenham last season

Football.London have revealed that Antonio Conte felt restricted at times last season as he was not able to change games by using his bench.

Tottenham have been quite busy so far this summer, announcing the captures of Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster on free transfers even before the transfer window officially opened.

On Tuesday, The Times reported Spurs had agreed on a fee with Brighton for the transfer of Yves Bissouma, who is expected to be the North London club’s third signing of the transfer window.

The report added that Spurs are far from done in the transfer window, with Conte still wanting two more defenders, an attacking midfielder and a forward following the addition of the Brighton star.

Gold has now explained why the Italian is so desperate to add more numbers to his squad.

The journalist revealed that the 52-year-old was ‘bewildered’ towards the end of the campaign as it took only four injuries to force him to name a bench dominated by young academy players.

As a result, it is said that Conte was not able to change games by using the options on his bench as he would have liked.

The Spurs head coach is said to have informed the club’s hierarchy that despite having a year left on his contract, he would need to feel ‘his way’ was going to be backed to stick around at the club.

Another big change next season is the fact that five substitutions will be allowed per game. That essentially means managers could change half of the outfield players in every match, thus opening the door for a lot of tactical tweaking. So, it is imperative that Conte has a lot more flexibility in terms of options going into the season.
