Report reveals why Hojbjerg rejected four other clubs in favour of Spurs move

The Guardian have revealed that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had no shortage of suitors in the summer, with Everton, Ajax, Monaco and his former club, Bayern Munich all wanting to snap him up before he eventually agreed to move to Tottenham.

Hojbjerg has undoubtedly been one of the signings of the summer as he has transformed Tottenham into a much more resilient outfit.

The midfielder put in another Man of the Match display in the North London Derby on Sunday, earning rave reviews from Jose Mourinho.

The Guardian reveal that Mourinho was the primary reason that the Denmark international decided to come to Tottenham over a move to Everton, Ajax, Monaco or a return to Bayern.

The report claims that signing a midfield pivot to protect the back four and deny the opposition space was the Tottenham boss’ main priority.

The Portuguese coach is said to have liked Hojbjerg’s strength of character and felt that the 25-year-old could thrive under the right system.

It is claimed that Hojbjerg made up his mind about a move to the Lilywhites as soon as he had a conversation with Mourinho, who told the former Southampton man that he wanted him to be his No 6 at the heart of the Spurs side.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is fair to say that not many people expected Hojbjerg to go on to have the impact that he has at Spurs. Even those who thought Hojbjerg would be a decent addition to the squad did not expect him to play as an out-and-out defensive midfielder considering the slightly more advanced role he played in at Southampton. Mourinho deserves huge credit for identifying that Hojbjerg can thrive as a number six.
