Report reveals why Spurs made a U-turn on Eric Dier’s contract situation

If recent reports are to be believed, then Eric Dier looks set to pen a new deal with Spurs in the near future (Fabrizio Romano).

Although the 26-year-old has played regularly since the arrival of Jose Mourinho back in November, his performances have blown hot and cold this season.

It was initially claimed that Tottenham were willing to part ways with the England international, with reports suggesting that he could potentially be used as a makeweight to bring Declan Rice to North London (90 min).

However, the Lilywhites seem to have completed a U-turn on the matter and now appear ready to offer the former Sporting Lisbon man a new deal. A report from Football Insider has now shed light on why Tottenham changed their minds.

They claim that the club were initially looking to cash in on Dier, who has just a year left to run on his current deal, but the COVID-19 crisis has prompted a rethink of the situation.

It is said that Spurs now realise it would cost them more than £30million to replace Dier this summer and have thus decided to offer the versatile star a new deal. The report also asserts that Dier very much remains valued by Jose Mourinho.

Spurs Web Opinion

I doubt that Jose Mourinho would have wanted to let Dier go even if the COVID-19 pandemic had not crippled our finances. The Spurs boss has shown that he trusts the 26-year-old and I expect to see him used quite regularly at centre-back next season.
