Report reveals why Tottenham abandoned any pursuit of Sam Johnstone

90 min have revealed that Tottenham decided to turn their attentions to Fraser Forster after Sam Johnstone expressed an intention to go elsewhere.

With Pierluigi Gollini’s loan spell at Tottenham coming to an end, it was reported a couple of weeks ago that Spurs were confident of landing Johnstone, whose contract with West Brom comes to an end this summer (The Sun).

However, things seem to have shifted quickly over the past few days, with Spurs now thought to have reached a full agreement with Forster over a free transfer (Fabrizio Romano).

Alasdair Gold admitted on his YouTube channel (at 1:16:36) that he was surprised by how the picture has changed regarding Johnstone as he had been informed by multiple sources that Spurs were on the verge of snapping up the 29-year-old.

90 min have now explained that while Tottenham did hold talks with the Baggies shot-stopper, it became ‘clear’ to the North London club that the goalkeeper wanted to go elsewhere.

The report adds that Manchester United remain interested in snapping up Johnstone.

If Johnstone was not attainable, Froster was the next best option for Spurs, given that the 34-year-old is homegrown, has Premier League experience and is available on a free transfer.

The England international is not very comfortable with the ball at his feet but he is a good shot-stopper and is capable of filling in for Lloris for a few matches if needed.
