Report reveals why Tottenham are ‘cautiously optimistic’ over Zaniolo deal

The Daily Express report that the Tottenham hierarchy are still ‘cautiously optimistic’ at the prospect of signing AS Roma winger Nicolo Zaniolo before the transfer window closes.

90 min reported on Monday that Tottenham had made an offer to sign Zaniolo on loan with an obligation to buy for €25m (£21.1m) plus a further €10m (£8.4m) in add-ons, which was rejected by Roma.

The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (09/08/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness) subsequently revealed there is still a distance between the fee Spurs are offering for the 23-year-old and the price the Giallorossi are demanding for the player.

The report added that, in addition to the transfer fee, the Serie A club also want around €10m (£8.4m) upfront as a loan fee, which Spurs are not willing to pay.

Despite these reported disagreements, The Express have now asserted that Spurs are still optimistic about reaching an agreement with Roma for Zaniolo after finalising the signing of Destiny Udogie.

The report explains that Tottenham’s optimism comes from the fact that Zaniolo only has two years left on his contract at the Stadio Olimpico and the player is yet to begin talks with the Serie A club regarding a new deal.

Zaniolo’s contract situation does not mean Roma are desperate to sell him as the club could always begin negotiations over a new deal with the winger once the transfer window closes.

However, what is clear at the moment is that the Serie A club would sell the 23-year-old for the right fee. The only question is whether Spurs would be willing to meet their asking price.
