Report: Roma interested in signing Tottenham player who cost £25.8m last year

Roma have joined Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Tottenham right-back Emerson Royal, according to the Express.

Managed by former Spurs coach Jose Mourinho, I Giallorossi are said to be interested in securing a deal for the Brazil international, who only moved to North London last summer.

The Italian side’s stance comes after Atletico submitted a formal offer for Emerson (Football Insider), despite the defender’s representatives stating Antonio Conte wants to keep him on board at Spurs (Lance).

Secured in a £25.8m deal from Barcelona (BBC Sport), Emerson produced a fairly inconsistent debut campaign in English football.

However, the 23-year-old emerged as a solid option for Conte towards the end of last term as Tottenham surged towards Champions League qualification.

Spurs remain in the market for a new right-wing-back, with the Daily Mail claiming they are in advanced talks to sign Middlesbrough youngster Djed Spence.

The Mirror add the England U21 international is set to undergo a medical ahead of finalising a transfer worth around £15m.

Spurs Web Opinion

Emerson seems to have impressed Conte with some of his performances towards the end of last season to the point where he wants to keep him going forward.

He isn’t exactly the most convincing option for that right-wing-back role but he could be a useful asset to have in terms of squad depth, which will definitely be needed next season.
