Report: Roma ready to push ahead in quest to sign Tottenham player this summer

AS Roma have become the latest club to enter the race for Tottenham defender, Jan Vertonghen, this summer, according to The Sun.

Despite being a Tottenham man for the past eight seasons, Vertonghen’s contract looks set the expire at the end of this campaign unless a renewal can be agreed.

Contract talks between the club and long-serving defender have reportedly stalled as Tottenham were not willing to offer the Belgian international the two-year deal that he demanded (Football Insider).

Unsurprisingly, it turns out that Vertonghen is a wanted man with Inter Milan said to be leading the race for his signature (Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness).

Napoli and Roma have also been credited with an interest in the 31-year-old (Gazzetta dello Sport via TEAMtalk).

The Sun report that Roma are now ready to push ahead with a deal to bring the Spurs star to Italy after admitting defeat in their quest to make Chris Smalling’s loan deal a permanent one.

This could have further repercussions for Spurs, who are also said to be one of the clubs interested in signing Smalling this summer (Corriere Dello Sport via The Express).

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not all surprised that so many Italian teams are in for Vertonghen. Despite seemingly losing a bit of pace and sharpness, the centre half still has a couple of years left in him at the highest level and slower pace of Serie A will certainly suit his game.
