Report: Rumoured Spurs summer target puts contract talks on hold

The Sun have revealed that West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who was rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar in the summer has decided to put talks over a new deal at the Hawthorns on hold.

Despite West Brom’s relegation from the top-flight last season, Johnstone earned rave reviews for his performances.

The 28-year-old, who was part of England’s squad for the Europen Championship, was linked with a move to Spurs during the summer but the North Londoners instead snapped up Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta on an initial loan deal with an option to buy.

Johnstone ended up remaining at The Hawthorns and he has made a bright start to the new season with the Baggies, who are sitting at the top of the Championship table.

The Sun claim that the Preston-born shot-stopper has decided to park negotiations over a new contract with West Brom in order to focus on helping the club get back into the top-flight.

The report adds that West Brom remain keen on getting Johnstone to commit his future to the club with his current contract ending next summer.

Hugo Lloris is certainly showing no evidence of decline and so, I would be surprised if the Frenchman is not handed a new contract.

It remains to be seen if Gollini will impress enough this season for Spurs to consider activating the option to buy him. The Italian might also reconsider joining Spurs permanently if he feels he is likely to play second-fiddle to Hugo for a couple of years.

So, the question of whether Tottenham need to go for a new goalkeeper next summer is one that is still very much up in the air.
