Report: Rumoured Spurs target misses friendly as club plan sale

According to a report by German publication Waz, rumoured Tottenham target Weston McKennie was left out of Schalke’s pre-season friendly on Tuesday with the club did not want to risk injury ahead of a potential summer transfer.

The Bundesliga side were humbled 3-1 by third-tier Uerdingen in an embarrassing start to their pre-season campaign.

Previous reports indicated that Jose Mourinho is a fan of the USA international and is keen to bring him to Spurs (Football Insider).

However, Southampton have now been established as the front-runners for the midfielder’s signature and are currently said to be in negotiations with Schalke over his transfer (ESPN).

Waz claim that the Gelselcherhin club have made their mind up to cash in on the midfielder and are wrapping him in cotton wool in before his sale.

It is suggested that the German outfit are desperately in need of funds and believe that McKennie could be sold for around £20million this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

A defensive midfielder is not a priority anymore after the successful acquisition of Hojbjerg. Even with Winks going out on loan, between Hojbjerg, Winks, Sissoko, Lo Celso, Ndombele and Gedson, we have sufficient options in the central areas. The priority now has to be a new right-back, a centre-half and a backup to Kane.
