Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels, who is rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar, will miss the European Championship this summer, with Bulinews confirming that the Belgian international is set undergo surgery.
However, that claim was contradicted by Football Insider who reported earlier this week that the Tottenham captain is set to sign a new contract with the Lilywhites after productive discussions with Daniel Levy.
If Lloris does depart, Spurs will have to find a new number one this summer and reports from Germany indicate that Casteels is one of the names on the club’s shortlist.
It has been claimed that the 28-year-old would be in favour of a move to the North London club (Bild).
Spurs fans who were hoping to catch a glimpse of the goalkeeper in action for Belgium this summer are set to be disappointed as he will miss the Euros.
While Thibaut Courtois continues to be the Red Devils’ number one, Casteels may have held hopes of featuring in a group stage game.
However, Bulinews have now confirmed that the Wolfsberg star will undergo surgery to remove a plate inserted at the start of the 2018/19 season.
Speaking about the disappointment of missing out on the opportunity to represent his country at the Euros, the rumoured Tottenham target told the publication: “Of course it’s a pity I will miss the European Championship.
“But, unfortunately, no other decision was possible because the plate has caused me permanent great pain for almost two years.
“My goal now is to get fit again as quickly as possible after the operation so I can start preparing for the new season pain-free.”
