Report says decision to take Spurs youngster on loan has been an ‘absolute failure’

The print edition of Diario de Sevilla (as relayed by Sport Witness) has criticised Sevilla for the decision to sign Alejo Veliz on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, insisting that the move has not worked out the way the La Liga club would have wanted.

Veliz was carrying an injury when he made the temporary switch to Sevilla in January but even after recovering, the striker has struggled to get minutes in Spain.

The 20-year-old is still waiting for his first start at the La Liga side, having played just 52 minutes across three appearances so far (Transfermarkt).

Last week, ABC Sevilla questioned why the Argentine is not getting any opportunities and criticised Sanchez Flores for that fact. The outlet suggested that the Sevilla boss is hesitant to trust younger players and even asserted that he ‘doesn’t give a damn’ about Veliz.

Alejo Veliz has fallen down the Sevilla pecking order

Diario de Sevilla have now offered a reason for why Veliz has not played, revealing that the Tottenham man has dropped down the pecking order after Dodi Lukébakio returned from injury.

With the Argentine being left out of the Sevilla squad against Celta Vigo last weekend, they describe the loan signing as an ‘absolute failure’.

With the move not working out so far, they suggest that Tottenham could be quite worried about the youngster’s lack of game time.

Most of the loan moves that Tottenham greenlit in January have worked out well, with Johan Lange and co clearly putting a lot of work into finding the right clubs for various youngsters so that they can get regular game time.

However, the Veliz one has simply not worked out and with hindsight, Spurs might feel they would have been better off loaning the 20-year-old to a Championship side.
