Report: Senior figures at Arsenal wanted to sign this Spurs player in the summer

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was the first player to arrive through the door at Tottenham in the summer transfer window under Jose Mourinho.

While the midfielder was seen by many as a functional addition rather than a player to get excited about, he has proven to be one of the best signings of the summer.

The former Southampton man has slotted seamlessly in the base of the Spurs midfield and his ability to read danger, his technical qualities and his leadership skills have turned Mourinho’s men into a much more sturdy outfit.

Hojbjerg could once again prove pivotal for Spurs in winning the midfield battle against Arsenal in the all-important North London Derby on Sunday.

However, if a report in The Athletic is to be believed, the 25-year-old may well have turned out in Arsenal colours for the clash this weekend had things gone differently.

The report claims that the Gunners held an interest in the midfielder, having watched him closely during his time at Southampton. It is even asserted that some senior figures at Arsenal were particularly keen on signing Hojbjerg.

Spurs fans will certainly be thankful that they were able to steal a march on their North London rivals when snapping up the midfielder.
