Report: Senior figures at Spurs lead inquest into club’s failure to sign 23-year-old

According to Football Insider, there is currently an on-going inquest at Tottenham Hotspur regarding the North Londoners’ failure to snap up Ben Godfrey last summer.

Godfrey was rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar over a year ago but it was Everton who signed the defender from Norwich for £25m last summer following the Canaries’ relegation from the Premier League.

The versatile defender has made quite an impression in his first season at Goodison Park and looks set to become a key player for Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the years to come.

Football Insider claim that Godfrey has been a long-term target for Tottenham, with Norwich knocking back an offer Spurs made for the 23-year-old back in December 2019.

Tottenham were in the market for a central defender last summer and eventually ended up signing Joe Rodon from Swansea City.

However, it is now said that questions are being asked internally as to why Spurs did not push the Toffees harder for Godfrey’s signature.

Given that Godfrey is the same age as Rodon and cost just around £10- £15m more than the former Swansea man, the England international would certainly have been a much safer gamble for Spurs to take considering how well he did in the Premier League with Norwich last season.

While Rodon has shown promising signs in the few opportunities that have come his way, the jury is still out on whether he is good enough for this level.
