Report: Senior Spurs player turned down chance to join Newcastle in the summer

According to the Sun, former Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris had the opportunity to join Premier League rivals Newcastle United on deadline day but he turned them down for one reason.

The report claims that the French World Cup winner wanted to be the first-choice goalie wherever he went. The Magpies have Nick Pope in their ranks and if Lloris had joined them, he would have been a backup to the 31-year-old Englishman.

Just a few days ago, Le Figaro reported that the 36-year-old veteran shot-stopper was ‘unhappy’ at Tottenham and that he was desperate for an exit from the club in January.

The report also added that one of the reasons why Lloris did not leave in the summer was that he expected chairman Daniel Levy to let him go on a free transfer but the club were looking to get a fee for him.

Despite his situation at the club, Guglielmo Vicario recently explained how Lloris had taken him under his wing and helped him settle into life in the Premier League and Tottenham Hotspur (Sky Sports Football Daily).

Lloris still has the desire to be number one

Even at 36, Lloris continues to desire that he must be the first-choice wherever he plays. Understandably, he turned down the Newcastle offer as he would not have gotten much game time.

Technically, he is still a part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad but is now third-choice in the pecking order behind Vicario and Fraser Forster. Lloris did not take part in pre-season and is yet to make a single matchday squad.

A Tottenham legend in his own right, Lloris has been at the club for 11 years now. He has made 444 appearances for the North London club, keeping 151 clean sheets (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

Even at this age, Lloris’ burning desire to continue competing at the highest level is commendable. Being the true professional that he is, he hasn’t made a fuss about his situation at the club and has helped Vicario behind the scenes.

It was clear last season that it was time to move on from Lloris. However, we must not forget everything he has done for the club in all these years. His time at Tottenham might be coming to an end, but let’s hope this is not the end of his exemplary career.
