According to a report from Tuttomercatoweb, Roma have entered the race to sign rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Jannik Vestergaard.

Spurs are reportedly prioritising strengthening their defence in this summer’s transfer window which does not come as a surprise given their struggles at the back over recent months.

Vestergaard is set to enter the final year of his contract at St Mary’s at the end of the season and he is said to be one of the options on Tottenham’s radar.

It has even been suggested that the North Londoners view the Saints star as a potential alternative to Milan Skriniar if Inter refuse to sell the Slovak this summer.

However, some sources (The Athletic and Hampshire Live) have also revealed that Southampton have opened talks with the 28-year-old over a new contract to ward off Tottenham’s interest.

TMW now report that Roma are also surveying the possibility of snapping up the Dane this summer.

The report mentions that the Saints star, who is also ‘liked’ by Tottenham, is a player the Giallorossi are eyeing as a potential replacement for former Spurs man Federico Fazio.

It remains to be seen whether there is truth to our rumoured interest in Vestergaard as Alasdair Gold has said that the Denmark international is not an option Spurs are currently looking at.

It is possible that the 28-year-old’s representatives have thrown Tottenham’s name into the mix in order to strengthen their position while negotiating a new contract with Southampton.
