Report: Serie A club see Spurs defender as a great market ‘opportunity’

According to Corriere dello Sport (as relayed by Calciomercato) AS Roma remain attentive to the situation of Tottenham defender Eric Dier.

Roma’s interest in Dier first came to light last month, when the print edition of Italian news outlet Tuttosport (14/10/23 via Corriere Giallo Rosso) claimed that Dier is Jose Mourinho’s ‘favourite name’ as the Portuguese coach seeks improvements to his defence.

Corriere now explained that strengthening at centre-back is a priority for the Giallorossi in January owing to Chris Smalling’s injury troubles.

The report claims that Dier continues to be the name that is ‘most appreciated’ by Mourinho, with the Roma boss liking the England man’s profile.

Mourinho and Roma still interested in Eric Dier

The outlet states that the chances of the 29-year-old signing a new deal with Tottenham are ‘almost nil’, given that he is not favoured by Ange Postecoglou. So, the Serie A side see the Tottenham man as a great ‘opportunity from an economic point of view’ in January.

However, the publication adds that with Dier also being mooted as a target for the likes of Bayern Munich and Sporting Lisbon recently, Roma technical director Tiago Pinto is also assessing other alternatives, including Genoa’s Radu Dragusin.

While Dier’s preference might be to leave as a free agent next summer so that he will have several options to choose from, the centre-back would likely be tempted to leave in January if a good opportunity such as a move to Roma opened up.
