Report: Serie A club turned down Tottenham’s approach for 20-year-old

Calciomercato have claimed that AS Roma turned down Tottenham’s approach for Nicola Zalewski during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham were heavily linked with Nicolo Zaniolo during the final month of the window (90 min) but the North London club were not able to get a deal for the Italy international over the line in the end.

If the latest reports from Italy are to be believed, Zaniolo is not the only Roma player that Spurs were after, with Antonio Conte’s men also thought to have attempted to poach Zalewski from the Stadio Olimpico.

The versatile 20-year-old, who has been deployed on the wing as well as at left-back, has won many admirers since making his senior debut for the Giallorossi towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Corriere Dello Sport (02/08/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness) reported last month that Spurs were eyeing a late move for the Poland international.

Tottenham’s interest in Zalewski has now been backed up by CalcioMercato, who state that Roma turned down advances from the Premier League club as well as Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

The report adds that the wide-man is now on the radar of Chelsea but Jose Mourinho’s men are trying to tie him down to a new contract, and are willing to triple his current wages.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Spurs did hold a serious interest in Zalewski, I suspect Conte and Paratici viewed the Roma youngster as a potential option for the left wing-back role in the future. Perhaps, they considered the Polish international as an alternative to Destiny Udogie.
