Report: Serie A giants not prepared to give up on Spurs ace

Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham has been the subject of intense media speculation over the last few months.

The defender’s contract contains a £25 million release clause that can be activated until July 26th; two weeks prior to the closing of the transfer window (The Guardian).

The club which are reported to the furthest along in negotiations with Spurs for the Belgian international are Roma, with the Serie A club’s sporting director recently confirming their interest in the Tottenham defender (Football Italia).

However, Roma announced on Wednesday that they had completed the signing of Atlanta centre half Gianluca Mancini, who Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claimed was the alternative Roma had identified for the Belgian.

However, according to a report in Il Messaggero (via Sport Witness), Roma have not given up on their hopes of signing Alderweireld, who is currently in Singapore with the rest of the Spurs squad on their pre-season tour.

The publication claims that the Giallorossi will make another approach to Spurs in the coming days with the hope of landing the 30-year-old before the July 26th transfer clause expires.

Spurs Web Opinion

With only a week left until Alderweireld’s release clause expires, Roma need to act fast if they wish to get him. We believe it would be ideal if the Belgian ends up staying for one more season so that the club can focus on improving other areas of the pitch this summer.
