Report: Serie A goalkeeper is ‘desired’ by Spurs as Hugo Lloris successor – May be difficult to sign

According to La Repubblica (24/01/23 as relayed by Calcio Napoli24 and SportWitness), Tottenham want Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret to replace Hugo Lloris but the 25-year-old has decided to stay put at the Serie A club.

Multiple publications over recent weeks have indicated that Spurs are likely to enter the market for a new number one to replace Lloris in the summer (Football.London).

According to sources, Antonio Conte’s men are on the lookout for a goalkeeper who is good with the ball at his feet, with Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Brentford’s David Raya among the names on the club’s wishlist (Daily Mail).

La Repubblica have now suggested that Meret is also on the Lilywhites’ radar to replace the Frenchman but it is explained that the Premier League club will not find it easy to sign the Napoli star.

It is said that the Italian came close to departing Naples in the summer but has since won Luciano Spalletti’s trust with his displays this season.

The report adds that despite Tottenham’s interest, Meret has already decided to sign a long-term contract at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Spurs Web Opinion

Despite the speculation linking the likes of Meret, Jan Oblak and Dominik Livakovic with moves to Spurs, I remain convinced that we will look within the Premier League for Hugo’s successor.  Raya and Pickford are seemingly the two outstanding candidates but I can see us exploring moves for the likes of Robert Sanchez or Illan Meslier as well.
