Report: Serie A side have been following Spurs star ‘for years’

The race for Jan Vertonghen seems to be heating up as several clubs in Spain and Italy are said to be interested in the Spurs star.

Reports indicate that the central defender is unlikely to still be at Tottenham next season (Football Insider), and it looks as if there could be an almighty scrap for his signature.

It has been reported that Real Betis have already held talks with the centre-back’s representatives and are ready to offer him a two-year deal (Daily Star).

Roma are also said to be interested in the Belgian international, although it has been suggested that the wages he is demanding may be an issue for them (TuttoMercatoWeb via The Express).

Calcio Mercato have now revealed that Inter Milan are still very much in the race for the defender, having followed his progress for years.

It is claimed that Vertonghen’s wage demands are not an issue for Inter. However, it is said that Hellas Verona defender, Marash Kumbulla, remains the priority for Antonio Conte’s side.

If they cannot get Kumbulla in this summer, it is suggested that they will make a move to replace Diego Godin with Vertonghen.

Whoever Vertongnhen signs for, this is likely to be the last big contract of his career. Therefore, the Belgian deserves to make the most of his free-agent status this summer and land a lucrative deal. I suspect he will be able to get a much better deal at Inter than either Betis or Roma.
