Report: Several clubs now pushing for suspension of Premier League

ESPN have revealed that an increasing number of clubs are now calling for the Premier League to be suspended until the New Year in light of the increasing number of COVID-19 cases.

Nine league fixtures have been called off this month due to an outbreak of the virus at various clubs, including Tottenham’s last two Premier League fixtures against Brighton and Leicester.

The Premier League have announced that they intend to continue fulfilling the current fixture list where it is safely possible.

However, ESPN have now said that several clubs in the division are asking for the league to be temporarily suspended.

It is said that clubs would support suspending matches until the weekend of January 8-9, when FA Cup third-round ties are due to take place.

That would mean postponing four rounds of league games starting with the matches this weekend and restarting the league on January 15.

In addition to having their last two Premier League games called off due to the outbreak, Spurs also could not fulfil their clash against Burnley earlier this month due to heavy snowfall at Turf Moor.

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect that the Premier League will eventually be forced to suspend the competition as an increasing number of matches are called off over the coming days and weeks.

The integrity of the competition will be questioned if the PL forces some clubs to proceed with their fixtures despite having players out with the virus, after accepting requests of other clubs to have their matches postponed.
