Report sheds light on Tottenham’s plan for left centre-back role this summer

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are expected to sign a high-quality left-sided centre-back this summer even if Clement Lenglet completes a permanent move to the club.

Over the past month, plenty of Spanish outlets have talked up the chances of Spurs signing Clement Lenglet permanently from Barcelona.

The latest such report came from Mundo Deportivo, who claimed earlier this week that Tottenham have been pleased with the Frenchman this season and suggested that the player is waiting to see who takes over as the head coach before giving the green light to the switch.

During his press conference on Friday, Ryan Mason suggested that Spurs are indeed looking to keep the 27-year-old at the club and confirmed that the club will sit down with Barcelona for talks over a deal this summer (Football.London).

The Athletic have now stated that even though Lenglet might join permanently, the North London club are also expected to enter the market for another left centre-back as a first-choice option.

The publication states that Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie is one of the options the Lilywhites have their eye on ahead of the transfer window.

If the next Tottenham boss plays a back four, that would mean that Ben Davies can only be an option as a left-back.

That would certainly necessitate another left-sided centre-back apart from Lenglet, with Piero Hincapie, Pau Torres and Evan Ndicka seemingly being the most realistic targets.
