Report: Sky Sports claim Spurs could make late move for Ligue 1 attacker

Sky Sports have revealed on their live transfer blog (at 13:23) that Tottenham could make a late move for Monaco winger Gelson Martins after facing a roadblock in their efforts to sign Leeds winger Dan James.

The Evening Standard reported earlier today that although James is expected to leave Elland Road before the transfer deadline, a move to Tottenham is unlikely for the Wales international.

The report added that Spurs preferred a loan deal for the former Manchester United man while Leeds wanted to sell him permanently.

Sky Sports have now explained that Fabio Paratici and Antonio Conte met this morning to discuss alternatives to the Leeds star.

One player the pair have allegedly identified is Martins, who is thought to fit the profile of the player Conte is looking for as the Portugal international can operate either on the left or right.

The report adds that the Moncao star is keen on a move to the Premier League and asserts that Spurs will allow Bryan Gil to join Valencia on loan if they secure the 27-year-old’s signature.

Gelson Martins is not a name that will excite Spurs fans but it is worth reiterating that we are only after a squad player to replace Gil.

Whoever we sign would probably be the sixth choice for the front three roles and is only likely to make a handful of appearances off the bench.

In fact, Paratici might only be looking at potential loan options rather than permanent signings.
