Report: Some argue Harry Kane is not actually England’s all-time leading scorer

BBC Sport have revealed that Harry Kane might not be the player to score the most goals in an England shirt, with former Three Lions star, Vivian Woodward, thought to have scored an astonishing 90 goals around the turn of the last century.

Kane surpassed Wayne Rooney’s tally of 53 during last month’s international break and the striker will undoubtedly go down in many people’s estimation as the greatest marksman to play for England.

However, BBC Sport have revealed that FC Clacton in Essex have pointed out he is still to beat the record of their ex-player Woodward.

The report states that Woodward died in 1954 and the club are still searching for his caps and shirts, having been unable to find them so far.

Woodward grew up in the seaside town and played for Clacton Town from the year of their founding in 1892, with the striker eventually making a big move to Spurs and then Chelsea.

It is asserted that he notched up 29 goals in 23 full international appearances for England but local historian Norman Jacobs believes he scored an additional 57 goals scored for England Amateurs as well as four in England games not recognised officially by the FA.

FC Clacton’s chairman Stephen Andrews told BBC Sport: “We can’t find anything.

“His caps are out there somewhere, the various medals he won and the things he would have been presented by the Football Association (FA) for taking them abroad – the England shirts.

“There’s so much out there somewhere and it’s a mystery.”

Even if the caps and shirts are found, and Woodward is proven to have scored 90 goals, I do not think anybody would include him in the list of England’s top scorers, given that football was, by no means, a professional sport back then.
