Report: Some at Norwich thought Spurs starlet was better than Maddison in 2018

The Athletic have revealed that Norwich insiders thought Marcus Edwards was more talented than James Maddison during the former Spurs man’s spell at Carrow Road.

Edwards made just one senior appearance for Spurs before the club let him go in 2019 but the youngster’s talent was never in doubt, with former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino even once likening him to Lionel Messi (Sky Sports).

The winger has started to fulfil his potential since his move from Vitoria de Guimaraes to Sporting Lisbon in January, with the 23-year-old’s long-range strike in the 1-1 draw against Spurs on Wednesday being his fifth goal of the season, to go with another five assists (Transfermarkt).

Edwards was loaned out by Spurs to Norwich in the second half of the 2017-18 season but he made just one appearance for the Canaries and returned to N17 early for ‘personal reasons’ (Sky Sports).

The Athletic have now explained that even though Edwards was not at Norwich for long, he was highly thought of by Daniel Farke and his coaching staff.

It is asserted that some at the club thought the winger was better than Maddison, who was also with the Canaries at the time.

Edwards’ talent has never really been in doubt. It was his attitude that Mauricio Pochettino seemed to have concerns about. Had the winger put his head down and worked hard, I am sure that the Argentine would have handed him more opportunities at a young age.
