Report: Some at Spurs have been ‘taken aback’ by Heung-min Son this month

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that many at Tottenham have been pleasantly surprised by the way Son Heung-min has stepped up to the plate since being handed the captain’s armband.

Gold states that some at the club were surprised when Ange Postecoglou decided to hand Son the armband.

Even though the forward has always been popular at the club and someone who is highly respected, not many saw him as a leader, demonstrated by the fact that he was not in the club’s previous leadership group, which consisted of Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

However, Gold explains that even those who doubted the appointment have now been ‘taken aback’ by how much Son has relished the leadership role.

The journalist states that the 31-year-old has already put in a lot of effort to repay the faith Postecoglou has placed in him.

Many at the club are said to have seen the forward grow quickly with the additional responsibility and become an active leader rather than just someone who is popular in the dressing room.

Gold adds that Son’s transition to the leadership role has been helped by the fact that he is well-liked by the other players, none of whom want to let him down.

Spurs Web Opinion

I can see why some would have been sceptical about the idea of having Son as captain. While the forward does lead by example on the pitch, he is a happy-go-lucky sort of figure and someone who can even be described as the joker of the dressing room.

However, some people are more than capable of rising to the occasion when they are handed more responsibility, and it appears as if Son has shown a different side to him since he got the armband.

I just hope that the additional responsibility does not put extra pressure on the forward to deliver on the pitch as the 31-year-old is already someone who is often too critical of his own performances.
