Report: Some Spurs players had reservations over Conte’s appointment

According to a report from The Athletic, some of Tottenham’s current players were not completely on board with the idea of appointing Antonio Conte as the club’s next head coach.

It seemed as though a deal to bring Conte to Spurs was all but agreed last week but talks between the two parties have now stalled, much to the frustration of some Spurs fans.

It has been alleged that Tottenham decided to halt the talks since they feared that the club’s long-term financial health would be at risk if they handed Conte the transfer kitty he was demanding.

Some reports indicate that there is still a possibility that Conte might be Tottenham’s next head coach while others claim that the club could be set to move on to their other targets, including Erik Ten Hag and Roberto Martinez.

The Athletic have now revealed that Conte might not have been a popular choice in the Tottenham dressing room, with some of the players having ‘their own reservations’ about the Italian.

It is explained that they heard from their friends at other clubs how extreme and demanding the 51-year-old’s methods are and how little attention he paid to the talent coming through the academy ranks.

The report added that Conte was hugely impressive when he spoke to Spurs last week, talking in detail about his ambitions and how he would get the players fit and defensively well-organised.

While the former Inter boss is said to have given the impression that he was happy to come to the North London club, he reportedly made it clear to Tottenham that they should not sign him if they had any doubts over him.

It is stated that Conte hinted that he would walk out, just as he did at Inter, if Tottenham did not keep their promises.
