Report: Some Spurs players were ‘fearful’ of Conte being appointed

The Athletic have revealed that some Tottenham players were left fearing about their futures at the club when Antonio Conte was being linked with the job.

Tottenham confirmed Nuno Espirito Santo as their new head coach last week, 72 days after Jose Mourinho’s sacking in late April.

During that time, the club were linked with a whole host of candidates and the protracted nature of the search left some Spurs fans extremely frustrated.

The Athletic have now revealed that the players were just as frustrated, with one source revealing that they were left in ‘limbo’ until a week ago, not knowing who was going to be in charge and what their playing style was going to be.

Many were said to be keen on Graham Potter being appointed while there was also alleged to be excitement among the squad when Mauricio Pochettino was linked with a return to North London.

However, the links to Conte were not received with similar enthusiasm, with some fearing that they might not fit into the Italian’s philosophy.

It is asserted that the players were pleased to finally have a head coach in place last week and are keen to make an impression on Nuno and his coaching staff in pre-season.

As some have pointed out already, there do seem to be plenty of parallels between Pochettino’s appointment back in 2014 and Nuno’s this summer.

Like Pochettino at the time, Nuno comes with accomplished Premier League experience, even though he was not the club’s first choice. The appointment has not excited the fan base and expectations are quite low on the back of two difficult seasons.

The Portuguese coach also seems to be a charismatic character, who is capable of bringing the players and fans together.
