Report: Some Spurs staff regret they did not spot £12m player sooner

The Athletic have revealed that some at Tottenham regret the fact that they did not sign goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who completed a move to Southampton this summer.

Bazunu came through the Shamrock Rovers youth academy before moving to Manchester City at the age of 16.

The goalkeeper did not make a single senior appearance during his three years at the Etihad but he did have impressive loan spells at Rochdale and Portsmouth over the last two seasons.

Southampton paid £12m (Goal.com) to snap up the youngster from City this summer after Fraser Forster’s contract at the South Coast club ran out, with the experienced goalkeeper opting to join Spues on a feee transfer.

Bazunu has impressed between the sticks at the St Mary’s so far, and if The Athletic are to be believed, Tottenham now regret not making a move for him sooner.

The report claims that the likes of Spurs, Everton, Villarreal and Benfica were all tracking the 20-year-old.

It is alleged that some staff at Spurs are disappointed that they did not spot Bazunu soon enough as someone who could eventually replace Hugo Lloris as the club’s number one.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Tottenham have to worry about finding Lloris’ eventually successor anytime soon. If anything, the goalkeeper has only got better over the last couple of years. There is no reason why the Frenchman cannot continue playing for another three more years at the top level.
