Report: Some Spurs stars are ‘pushing’ for Conte to play rarely-used player

Some senior players at Tottenham are reportedly pushing for Joe Rodon to claim a starting role following the side’s downturn in form, according to Football.London.

Spurs have lost ground in the race for a spot in the top four having suffered their third consecutive Premier League defeat.

Having lost to Chelsea before the winter break, Spurs were beaten at home by both Southampton and Wolves with the displays on offer well below the standards set by Antonio Conte earlier this season.

The Lilywhites have lost main organiser Eric Dier in that time which has seemingly affected the defensive structure, with the back three of Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies often looking vulnerable.

Despite this, Conte has overlooked Wales international Rodon, who has been rooted to the bench for the vast majority of the Italian’s stint so far.

But Football.London claim some Spurs players now want the 24-year-old to be brought into the starting lineup, having seen his ability to play effectively in a three-man defence.

Rodon featured in such a system during his time at Swansea and was often deployed across all three roles in defence with the Championship side.

Rodon has had his struggles this season but he may be about to receive a chance to play with the defence currently faltering. There doesn’t seem to be much harm in trying him out for one game, but ultimately it is down to Conte’s decision rather than the players.
