Report: Son is closing in on a Harry Kane record after brace against Leicester

The Athletic have revealed that Son Heung-min is closing on Harry Kane’s record of having scored the most Premier League goals with his weaker foot.

Son netted a brace against Leicester on Sunday to help Tottenham to a 3-1 win, thus taking his tally to 19 goals in the Premier League this season – just three behind Mohamed Salah in the race for the Golden Boot (Premierleague.com).

The South Korean scored both goals with his left foot, and according to The Athletic, he now has the highest proportion of goals with his weaker foot out of any player in the division’s history.

Of goals scored with his feet, 44 per cent of the 29-year-old’s goals have come with his left. It is revealed that nobody else even comes close to such an even distribution, with Romelu Lukaku next on the list at 36 per cent.

Son’s double against Leicester has also made him only the second right-footed player to score 10 or more goals in a single Premier League season with his left foot, after Harry Kane in 2017-18.

11 of the former Bayer Leverkusen man’s 19 goals this season have come from his left foot, which means that he is only one away from Robin van Persie’s Premier League record, set in 2011-12 with Arsenal, of 12 goals scored with his weaker foot in a single season.

Finally, The Athletic also reveal that Son is now only two goals away from the record tally of 39 goals with the player’s weaker foot, which is currently shared by Kane and Van Persie.

I am not even sure if it is fair to classify Son’s left foot as his ‘weaker foot’. I genuinely would not be surprised if the South Korean prefers shooting with his left, particularly from long-range. The consistency with which he finds the top corner from the edge of the box with his left foot is quite unbelievable.
