Report: Sources reveal Tottenham’s plans for Timo Werner at the end of the season

Timo Werner may have impressed since joining Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month, but it is believed there are no intentions for the club to make his stay there permanent beyond this summer.

In a somewhat surprising move, Timo Werner was the first new face through the door at Tottenham in January, with the German winger signing on a six-month loan deal from RB Leipzig.

According to Sky Sports, the agreement to bring Werner to North London includes a £15m optional purchase clause that Spurs can activate if they wish to keep him.

The 27-year-old has made a fairly bright start to his Spurs career, with an assist on his debut. Werner was also seen making plenty of intelligent runs in the recent defeat to Manchester City, though he was rarely picked out with a pass to make the most of these runs.

While Ange Postecoglou is likely to keep Werner in his starting line-up while Heung-min Son is away on international duty, it remains to be seen how much game time he will get once the Spurs skipper is back.

Timo Werner likely to return to Germany

Looking further ahead, sources at Football Insider suggest Spurs are not planning to make Werner’s stay in London a permanent one, with the player set to return to Germany at the end of the season.

It is thought Tottenham “are not intent on triggering” the purchase option, but that could change if Werner was to put together a “stellar” run in the second half of the campaign.

Spurs Web Opinion

I think we have to go into this expecting Werner to only be here short term. The very nature of a purchase obligation allows us to have the best of both worlds: we either get temporary cover for the squad and then buy a better player in the summer, or Werner ends up being perfect for us and we keep him. I do think it would take a lot for him to activate that option, though.
