Report: Sources suggest Man United are ahead of Spurs in race for centre-back

Apparently, Manchester United have recently moved ahead of Tottenham in the race to sign Jean-Clair Todibo in the January transfer window.

Both clubs are desperate to add a new defender to their respective squads, with Tottenham still trying to fix a very broken defence which shipped 63 goals last season, and Manchester United leaking goals regularly still despite the resurgence of Harry Maguire.

Spurs looked to have their defensive issues resolved thanks to the summer signing of Micky van de Ven, but the Dutchman suffered a severe hamstring injury at the start of November and will be out until the New Year.

That leaves Cristian Romero needing a new defensive partner, but the likes of Eric Dier and Ben Davies have failed to hit the mark thus far when they have stepped into the side.

Naturally, then, Tottenham are expected to make the signing of a new centre-back their first priority in the January transfer window.

Will Todibo join Spurs or Man United?

Many names have been liked with the North London club, with Jean-Clair Todibo earmarked as a potential target (Evening Standard). The problem is, other clubs like the look of the Frenchman too.

The latest information from Football Insider has sources suggesting it is Manchester United who now “lead the race” to sign Todibo, having “climbed into pole position” very recently.

Spurs have “increased interest” in the player of late, but it seems the Red Devils hold the advantage, largely because of their prospective new owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The billionaire’s INEOS group are majority owners of French club Nice, where Todibo currently plays.

Spurs Web Opinion

It would be a real shame to lose out on this one, as Todibo is probably the best of the defensive targets we’ve been looking at. Still, we have plenty of other options, so it’s not the end of the world if we have to pivot to another.
