Report: Southampton confident of beating Tottenham to defender’s signature

Southampton are said to be confident of beating Tottenham to the signing of Reims defender, Axel Disasi, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The centre-half has managed to establish himself as a key part of Reims’ backline this season and has been one of the main reasons behind the club’s brilliant defensive record.

His performances in Ligue 1 have seen the 22-year-old’s transfer value skyrocket over the last twelve months, according to transfermarkt.com.

The Daily Mail claim that Tottenham have sent scouts to France to watch the defender this season and that they are thought to hold an interest in signing him.

While Disasi is a centre-half by trade, he can also play as a right-back, which could make him a great squad option to have for the Lilywhites.

However, the Mail claims that the Saints expect to see off interest from other clubs and bring the 6ft 3in defender to the St Mary’s Stadium.

The report asserts that Reims are willing to sell the young defender for just £13 million as Disasi has a year left to run on his contract with the club.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s links to Disasi make perfect sense, just like the speculation linking us with Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele, due to the versatility of the defenders in question. Given that we are unlikely to have a lot of transfer funds to work with, it would make sense to buy players who can cover multiple positions at the back so that we can spend most of our budget on a defensive midfielder and a forward.
