Report: Southampton favourites to beat the likes of Spurs to midfield target

Despite interest from Tottenham and several other Premier League clubs, it is Southampton who are leading the race to sign Manchester United starlet James Garner, according to Manchester Evening News.

Garner has won many admirers with his performances on loan in the Championship during the last two seasons, with the youngster helping Nottingham Forest win promotion to the top flight last campaign.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Erik Ten Hag had decided the 21-year-old is surplus to requirements and Tottenham were one of the clubs eyeing a move for the youngster, along with Everton, Southampton and Leeds United.

The Telegraph subsequently named Spurs and Nottingham Forest as the two frontrunners in the race for the midfielder’s signature.

According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, it is Fabio Paratici who is driving Tottenham’s interest in Garner, with the Spurs managing director of football said to have been impressed by the youngster when he scouted Djed Spence at the City Ground last season.

However, MEN have now claimed that despite interest from Spurs, Forest and Everton, it is the Saints who look likely to win the race for Garner as things stand.

The report adds that Man Utd value the England Under-21 international between £15m-£20m.

At 21 years of age, Garner would probably want to get a decent amount of minutes this season. The midfielder will know that is not likely to happen at Spurs.

Southampton have shown a willingness to give opportunities to young players, which is why a switch to St Mary’s would be tempting for the Man Utd man.
