Report: Southampton in talks to sign Bundesliga player linked with Spurs

ESPN have now installed Southampton as the front-runners to land rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target, Weston McKennie this summer.

McKennie has established himself as a regular in the Schalke side this season and his reputation has grown considerably over the course of the campaign.

The USA international is extremely versatile, having featured in a box-to-box role, as a midfield pivot, and even as a centre-back.

Football Insider claimed last month that Jose Mourinho was a fan of the 23-year-old and was keen on bringing him to Spurs.

ESPN have now revealed that the Lilywhites are still monitoring the Schalke star but they suggest that he is now edging closer to a move to St Mary’s.

The report asserts that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have identified McKennie as the ideal replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and have already begun talks with Schalke.

It is claimed that the midfielder is keen on a move to the Premier League and that he is expected to cost around £20million.

McKennie is certainly one for the future and the deal would also be commercial lucrative for the club since he is a USA international. So, I would not surprised if Tottenham closely examined the Schalke star as an option. However, with Hojbjerg having arrived, it does not appear likely that we would be prioritising a move for another central midfielder, especially with other glaring shortcomings in the squad.
